As swirling winds and torrential rain pummelled the capital city beginning in the late afternoon, loud thunderclaps could be heard.

A vehicle was spotted in Clapham, south London, with the top of a tree across its bonnet and windshield.

The tree’s trunk appeared to have split in two as it fell, with lighter-colored inner bark visible where it landed on the grass verge and pavement.

In the east, in Peckham, a guy was captured on film riding through floodwater, while another resident wore wellington boots as he passed stores.

Also impacted by flooding was King’s Cross.

Today is forecast to be largely moderate, although windy in many central and southern regions, and extremely windy near Channel shores.

This afternoon, most regions may anticipate a mix of sunshine and scattered showers, with thunder possible in the extreme south.
