Rishi Sunak declared his candidacy on social media last night, pledging to “establish trust, rebuild the economy, and unite the country.”

The former chancellor, whose Tuesday evening departure precipitated an avalanche of cabinet resignations, was swiftly supported by a substantial number of Conservative MPs.

Mark Spencer, leader of the House of Commons, stated that Mr. Sunak “is the leader who can unite the party,” while Oliver Dowden, former chairman of the Conservative Party, praised the former chancellor as “the best person to lead our country and undoubtedly the finest person to defeat Labour.”

Former cabinet member Liam Fox stated that Mr. Sunak is the only candidate with the “experience, ethics, and vision” necessary to lead the nation through the current economic crises.

Mr. Sunak, while announcing his candidacy, stated that the nation faces “serious challenges.”
