Ireland reaches Eurovision final; UK’s Olly Alexander debuts

  • Ireland’s Bambie Thug reaches Eurovision final after 2018, performing “Doomsday Blue”

Alongside Sweden’s Marcus & Martinus, the “big five” of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy have already advanced to the final. 

Since 2018, Bambie Thug has been Ireland’s first Eurovision Song Contest finalist. 

The 31-year-old performed Doomsday Blue, an alternative composition, at the Eurovision semifinals in Malmo, Sweden. 

Six years ago, Ryan O’Shaughnessy qualified for the Ireland-United competition in Lisbon, Portugal, where he placed sixteenth. 

The inaugural performance of Olly Alexander from the United Kingdom was an inverted locker room staging of Dizzy. 

The United Kingdom, which has already advanced to the finals, appeared in its inaugural semifinal. 

Alexander directed the rotation of the cameras to create the illusion that he and the performers were in motion. 

In their inaugural Eurovision performance, Bambi’s dancers exhibited devil-like features, including blue paint, exaggerated ears, and false fangs. 

At the song’s midpoint, they unveiled the transgender flag affixed to their ensemble. 

Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil of Ukraine, representing Teresa & Maria, Windows95Man of Finland, No Rules!, and Teya Dora of Serbia, representing Ramonda, all advanced to the final.

Silia Kapsis of Cyprus is paired with Liar, Silvester Belt of Lithuania is paired with Luktelk, Baby Lasagna of Croatia is paired with Rim Tim Tagi Dim, Raiven of Slovenia is paired with Veronika, Iolanda of Portugal is paired with Grito, and Tali of Luxembourg is paired with Fighter. On Thursday, they will face off against those who advance from the semifinals. 

Alongside Sweden’s Marcus & Martinus, the “big five” of the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy have already advanced to the final. 

The Norwegian-born siblings transformed the stage into a nightclub during their rendition of Unforgettable. 

Swedish humorist Petra Mede and Hollywood actress Malin Akerman served as hosts of Eurovision.
