Surprise Grammy appearance by Celine Dion

  • Dion surprises at Grammys
  • Discusses living with SPS
  • Documentary on illness announced

Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder, did not prevent Celine Dion from making a surprise appearance at the Grammys.

The 55-year-old singer received a standing ovation as she entered the auditorium to present the album of the year tribute.

Thank you, everyone… When I say I’m thrilled to be here, I truly mean it from the bottom of my heart,” Dion stated.

Taylor Swift was honoured with the award for her album Midnights.

The singer, known for My Heart Will Go On, was joined on stage by her son to present the evening’s most prestigious award, 27 years after it was presented to her by Diana Ross and Sting.

“Those fortunate enough to attend the Grammy Awards should never take for granted the immense love and joy that music brings into our lives and to people around the world,” she said.

Swift was among those who stood in support of Dion as she sang The Power of Love while walking onto the stage.

However, she later faced online criticism for her brief appearance to acknowledge Dion as she handed her the trophy; instead, she engaged in animated conversation with her companions on stage.

Dion and Swift later took photos together.

Dion had previously revealed that muscle spasms prevented her from walking normally and using her vocal cords properly when she disclosed her diagnosis in December 2022. She ultimately cancelled her Courage world tour.

Muscle spasming and stiffening are the primary symptoms of SPS. These symptoms may be triggered by environmental stimuli such as loud noises but may decrease once the stimulus is removed.

Currently, there is no cure for SPS; however, the condition can be managed with muscle relaxants and sedatives.

Since her diagnosis, the star is rarely seen in public. She made her first public appearance in three years in November, reportedly singing a few notes at a hockey game in Las Vegas.

A documentary following the singer as she deals with her illness was announced to premiere on Amazon Prime Video last month.

“The journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, without letting it define me, has been such a challenge for me over the past couple of years,” said the Because You Loved Me star in a press release.

“As I continue the process of resuming my performing career, I’m increasingly aware of how much I’ve missed connecting with my fans.

During my absence, I made the conscious decision to document this particular chapter of my life in order to shed light on this rare disease and offer support to those who are diagnosed with it.”

In her four-decade career, the vocal powerhouse has sold over 250 million copies and won five Grammys.
