Bill Granger: Avocado toast’s ‘Godfather’ dies

  • Bill Granger, renowned Australian chef, dies
  • Known for “avocado toast”
  • Tributes from celebrities and chefs

On Christmas Day, Australian chef Bill Granger passed away with his wife and daughters by his bedside, according to a statement from his family.

Renowned Australian chef and “godfather of avocado toast” Bill Granger passed away at the age of 54.

His family said in a statement that the restaurateur, chef, and culinary writer “died peacefully in hospital” in London on Christmas Day, surrounded by his wife and children.

On Instagram, they wrote, “He will be remembered as the ‘King of Breakfast’ for elevating ordinary fare to a sublime, sun-drenched state and for fostering the international expansion of informal and communal Australian dining.”

“His loss will be most profoundly felt by his cherished family, who are eternally grateful for the support and affection that has been extended to him. He will be sorely missed by all.

Over three decades, the self-taught chef amassed an empire of nineteen restaurants in Sydney, London, Greater Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Seoul, propelling him to international renown.

However, arguably his most renowned innovation was the unassuming avocado toast, which first appeared on the menu of his café, Bill’s, in 1993.

However, he stated in 2015 to a Melbourne newspaper that he could not claim full credit.

Avocado was included on a list of toast-complementary sides. I shall ascribe the credit for the dish’s invention to the patrons who assembled it.

Gwyneth Paltrow, a fellow actor, also responded to the online statement issued by the Granger family.

“This, my God, is absolutely heartbreaking!” “With all my affection, she wrote.”

The news was characterized as “heartbreaking” by Jamie Oliver and “heartbroken” by Nigella Lawson in an Instagram post.

What a gentleman he was! I am deeply saddened to hear this tragic news. A wonderful human being with a kind, tranquil nature, said television chef Oliver.

His cuisine embodied everything that he stood for, and I distinctly recall the initial encounter we had many years ago. He was exceptionally cordial and his meals were delectable.

He further expressed his deepest condolences to Granger’s entire family, stating that he will be “terribly missed.”

Granger was dubbed a “ray of Aussie sunshine” by Australian performer and actor Jason Donovan, while actor Richard E. Grant posted a series of heartbreak emojis.
