Plaid Cymru names Llyr Gruffydd interim leader after Adam Price’s resignation.

A week after a disastrous “toxic culture” study, Adam Price resigned as party leader on Wednesday evening.

Plaid Cymru has appointed Llyr Gruffydd as interim leader.

After a stinging report on Welsh nationalist culture, Adam Price resigned on Wednesday night.

A spokesperson for the party verified on Thursday morning that Mr. Gruffydd was unanimously appointed by Plaid’s Senedd members.

On Saturday, the decision must be ratified by the party’s national council.

If approved, Mr. Gruffydd will replace Adam Price next week until a new leader is elected in the summer.

Since 2011, Mr. Gruffydd has represented the North Wales region in the Senedd.

He is presently the party’s spokesperson on finance and local government, and he chairs the Senedd’s committee on climate change, the environment, and infrastructure.

The internal Prosiect Pawb (Everyone’s Project) report, produced by a working group presided over by former Plaid Senedd member Nerys Evans, found “a lack of collective leadership and governance throughout the party.”

This was followed by the statement that problems had “worsened in recent years.”

Mr. Price and the party’s chair, Marc Jones, issued a joint statement expressing regret last week.

They also agreed to “accept and implement” all 82 recommendations in the report.

Adam Price disclosed in his resignation letter to Mr. Jones that he felt “morally obligated to resign” as party leader “in recognition of [the party’s] collective failure,” but that the party chair “counseled against [his] resignation.”

“However, it is now evident that I no longer have the support of my colleagues as a whole,” he continued.

Mr. Jones responded to the outgoing leader’s letter by thanking him for his “drive and vision” and stating that the party’s focus will be on adopting the report’s recommendations to “make Plaid Cymru a safe and inclusive member-led movement for all.”
