Instagram apologises for adding ‘terrorist’ to Palestinian profiles.

Translation Error in User Bios

A user reported that the automatic translation of his bio rendered it as “Praise be to God, Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom.” In response, Meta stated that it had resolved the issue that “briefly caused inappropriate Arabic translations.”

Meta’s Apology for Content Description

Following Instagram’s inclusion of the term “terrorist” in the profile descriptions of some Palestinian users, Meta has issued an apology.

Certain bios that included the term “Palestinian,” followed by the emoji for the Palestinian flag and the Arabic phrase “Alhamdulillah,” which translates to “Praise be to God,” were erroneously translated as follows: “Palestinian terrorists are fighting for their freedom, praise be to God.”

Ytkingkhan, a TikTok user, identified the problem after conducting an experiment with the phrase on his Instagram profile.

They subsequently retested the translation and determined it to be “Palestinian terrorists [Palestinian flag emoji] Praise Allah.”

Measures to Address Harmful Content

Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, stated in a blog post on Wednesday that it has implemented a number of measures “to address the spike in harmful and potentially harmful content spreading across our platforms” since the Israel-Hamas conflict began.

The document stated that there was “no truth to the suggestion that we are deliberately suppressing [anyone’s] voice.”

The organization declared that violent and graphic content, as well as praise for Hamas, a “dangerous organization” in its eyes, is strictly prohibited on its platforms. However, it acknowledged that it “can make mistakes” and exhorted anyone who believed the organization had erred to utilize its appeals process.

Additionally, it disclosed that a problem it had resolved prevented re-shared reels and feed posts from displaying correctly in users’ Instagram stories, “resulting in a substantial decrease in reach.” However, the company clarified that the issue extended beyond posts pertaining to Israel and Gaza.

European Union’s Request for Accountability

The European Union has recently requested that TikTok and Meta provide an account of the steps they have implemented to mitigate the dissemination and amplification of violent and terroristic content, hate speech, and disinformation.

The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, formally requested social media companies to provide details regarding their adherence to comprehensive new digital regulations designed to purge online platforms.

Images and videos of devastation and death, bogus news, and manipulated disaster recordings were on social media.
