Heavy snowfall closes Manchester Airport’s runways.

Images from the airport depicted passengers stranded in planes on the runway, and one passenger reported a two-hour snow-related delay.

Due to heavy snowfall, Manchester Airport briefly shuttered both of its runways.

The airport announced that it was emptying the airfield as images showed passengers stranded on the runway.

The airport stated in a tweet that health and safety will “always be our top priority”. And recommended customers contact their airline for the most up-to-date flight information.

After a 2.5-hour closure, the airport said at approximately 9 am that “operations have resumed” and thanked travelers for their patience.

According to the flight tracking website FlightRadar24, a Virgin Atlantic flight from Atlanta was rerouted via Manchester to London due to runway constraints.

One passenger at Manchester Airport reported a two-hour delay and an additional hour spent “moving nowhere” on a jet.

Overnight, temperatures dropped to -10C (14F) in portions of the United Kingdom.

Following a drop in temperature, severe weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued across the United Kingdom in recent days.

In the early hours of Thursday, the temperature in Drumnadrochit near Inverness in the Highlands reached -10.4C (13.28F), making it the coldest temperature of the year thus far.

As the temperature in Topcliffe, North Yorkshire, plummeted to -7.4 degrees Celsius (18.68 degrees Fahrenheit), the lowest in England. Manchester Airport announced temporary runway closures at approximately 6.30 a.m.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Manchester. And other parts of the United Kingdom until noon today, with “additional disruption” likely from wintry showers.

On Friday afternoon, forecasters anticipate milder air to begin flowing into Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Tuesday in Somerset, England, a collision between a double-decker bus and a motorcycle resulted in the injuries of scores of individuals.

On Monday evening, Avon and Somerset Police received over a hundred reports of road-related incidents. The majority of which were caused by hazardous weather conditions.

Between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., the police received reports of 53 crashes, seven of which resulted in injuries.

Until Friday at 9 a.m., the UK Health Security Agency has issued a level three cold weather alert. Warning of conditions that “may increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and impair the delivery of services.
