Pope Francis departs the hospital after a checkup.

In recent years, the pontiff has endured a variety of maladies, including the removal of a portion of his colon in 2021.

Following a checkup, Pope Francis departed the Gemelli Hospital in Rome.

Following at least two recent episodes of illness, the 86-year-old had been examined at the hospital.

At the end of March, he spent several days in the same hospital following treatment for a respiratory infection, and he had to cancel performances last month due to a fever.

Pope Francis returned to the Vatican shortly after he was seen leaving and greeted guards as he normally does, according to witnesses at the Vatican’s Perugino gate, the primary entrance to the city-state.

Local media said that Francis visited the hospital’s geriatrics ward on Tuesday. The Vatican has not confirmed.

He delivered a noon liturgy in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican over the weekend.

Francis, who celebrated his tenth year as pontiff in March, has endured a variety of ailments in recent years and frequently uses a wheelchair or a cane to walk due to persistent knee discomfort.

In July 2021, he underwent surgery to remove a portion of his colon to treat diverticulitis, a debilitating bowel condition. Earlier this year, he stated that the condition had returned.

Additionally, a portion of one of his lungs was removed when he was a young man in Argentina.

The pontiff maintains a hectic schedule despite his health issues.

The Vatican announced on Saturday that Pope Francis will visit Mongolia in late August and early September.

He aims to visit a small Christian village during his country visit to visit Catholics on the Church’s periphery.

According to data provided by the non-profit Aid To The Church In Need, only 2% of Mongolians are Christians.

At the start of August, he will attend World Youth Day in Lisbon and visit Fatima.
