Malawi hippo capsizes canoe, killing child and 23 others.

Hippos hit the Nsanje District canoe carrying 37 persons across the Shire River.

A hippopotamus capsized a canoe in Malawi, killing a one-year-old and left 23 others missing.

Monday in the Nsanje District, a hippopotamus collided with a long wooden canoe transporting 37 individuals across the Shire River towards Mozambique.

According to authorities, thirteen individuals were rescued.

Police spokeswoman Agnes Zalakoma said the 23 people missing for more than 24 hours are considered dead.

Abida Mia, a government minister, reported that locals had informed her that hippos frequently caused problems in the area and that there were demands for the relocation of some of the animals.

According to the WWF, hippos are the second-heaviest land animal after elephants, weighing up to 4,000 kilograms.

There are between 115,000 and 300,000 hippos in sub-Saharan Africa, primarily in rivers and lakes.
