Ukraine war: Kyiv first utilises longer-range US missiles

  • US secretly supplies longer-range missiles to Ukraine against Russia
  • Additional American weaponry en route to Kyiv, aiming to bolster defenses
  • Intensified appeals for Western aid amid Ukraine’s struggle against Russia

American officials have confirmed that Ukraine has begun employing longer-range ballistic missiles against Russia, which were provided in secret by the United States.

This month, the firearms that were previously delivered as part of a US support package materialized. Officials stated that to preserve “operational security” in Ukraine, they were not publicly disclosed.

At least once, they were employed to attack Russian targets in occupied Crimea.

Additional US assistance is currently en route to Kyiv.

Additional American weaponry is anticipated to be delivered shortly, following President Joe Biden’s approval of a $61 billion (£49 billion) economic and military support package for Ukraine on Wednesday.

The missiles that have been covertly supplied are the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) with extended range, a spokesman for the State Department confirmed on Wednesday.

Before this, the United States had provided Ukraine with a mid-range variant of the ATACMS. However, it had refrained from delivering any more potent weapons, in part due to apprehensions regarding the potential compromise of American military readiness.

According to NBC, which first reported the news, officials were also concerned that the Ukrainians could use the armaments to launch attacks inside Russian territory, thereby escalating the conflict.

The Ukrainians have long demanded the 300-kilometer-range (186-mile-distance) missile-firing systems. In February, Mr. Biden reportedly provided the green light in secret.

The State Department spokesman verified to reporters on Wednesday that the longer-range ATACMS was “provided at the direct direction of the president.”

Vedant Patel explained that the United States “did not announce this at the outset at their request in order to maintain operational security for Ukraine.”

Although the exact quantity of the weapons that have been dispatched remains unknown, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that the administration intended to deliver more.

“They are poised to effect change.” He continued, “However, as I’ve previously stated from this podium, there is no silver bullet.”

The ATACMS’s extended range enables Ukraine to launch strikes further into Russian-held territory, specifically into storage facilities, logistical centers, and bases.

US media reported that they were utilized for the first time last week to attack a Russian airfield in occupied Crimea, and then again Tuesday night to launch an assault on Russian troops in the occupied port city of Berdyansk.

Russia stated on Wednesday that the introduction of the new weapons “will not significantly alter the course” of the conflict.

In recent months, Kyiv has intensified its appeals for Western aid due to the depletion of its ammunition inventories and Russia’s consistent advances.

Mr. Biden rubber-stamped the new aid measure on Wednesday, following months of gridlock caused by opposition from some members of Congress.

It is anticipated that an armaments package worth a billion dollars will be the first of many disbursements of the $61 billion in new aid, not all of which will be allocated to arms.

The United States has provided Ukraine with $44 billion in security assistance since the commencement of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The president of the United States stated, “It will make America and the world safer” after announcing the ratification of the new aid agreement.

In response to the bundle, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine stated, “At this juncture, we shall endeavour to rectify the impending six months of deliberations and uncertainties.”

“Take a step towards financial freedom – claim your free Webull shares now!”

We must oppose what the Russian occupier accomplished during this period and what Putin is presently conspiring to achieve.

Mr. Zelensky recently issued a warning that an impending Russian offensive was imminent, following the wintertime destruction of the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka.

In recent months, Ukrainian forces have been beset by a lack of ammunition and air defense systems; officials have attributed the loss of life and territory to delays in military aid from the United States and other Western allies.

Mr. Sullivan stated on Wednesday that “furthermore tactical gains by Russia are certainly conceivable in the coming weeks.”

Tens of thousands of people, the majority of whom were soldiers, have been slain or injured on both sides since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and millions of people have fled their homes.
