Tameside CID Detective Inspector Steven Horton stated: “The events of last evening are nothing short of tragic, and my sympathies are with the family and friends of the young girl who perished under such heinous circumstances.

“We are doing everything we can to support the girl’s family at this painful time, and we are committed to ensuring that they receive the answers they deserve regarding the cause of this tragedy.”

He said, “Based on our first investigations, we are convinced there are no suspicious circumstances, and this is a tragic reminder of the dangers of entering open water regardless of the weather.”

“We caution the public against cooling down in reservoirs, rivers, canals, or ponds.

“Please ensure your enjoyment of the warm weather is conducted safely. Consider your family and watch out for your pals.”

This summer has witnessed a rise in unfortunate drownings as many have taken to the water to escape the harsh heat.
