The Austrian driver’s Ferrari F512M was stolen while participating in the 1995 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy.

Police have recovered a Ferrari stolen from former Formula One driver Gerhard Berger nearly three decades ago.

Berger was competing in the 1995 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Italy when an additional sports car was seized in addition to his Ferrari F512M.

The police suspect that the vehicle, a redesigned model of the renowned Ferrari Testarossa, was dispatched to Japan shortly after being stolen.

In contrast, the classic Ferrari red sports car, estimated to be worth approximately £350,000, was imported into the United Kingdom in late 2023.

The Metropolitan Police became aware of the incident in January of this year after receiving a report from the Italian vehicle marker.

Investigations conducted by Ferrari on a vehicle purchased by an American buyer through a UK broker in 2023 unveiled that it had been the subject of theft.

PC Mike Pilbeam oversaw the investigation and stated, “It took us only four days to locate the stolen Ferrari after it had been missing for over 28 years.

“Our meticulous investigations encompassed reaching out to authorities internationally.”

We collaborated expeditiously with international car dealerships, Ferrari, and the National Crime Agency; this partnership was crucial in determining the vehicle’s history and preventing it from eluding capture.

The second vehicle has yet to be located.

While no arrests have been made as of yet, the force added that investigations are ongoing.

The Ferrari F512M was the final iteration of the legendary Testarossa produced by the Italian automaker. Approximately 500 were manufactured from 1994 to 1996.

Testarossa was Ferrari’s flagship model for a significant portion of the 1980s, establishing an association with affluent individuals and making a notable appearance in the critically acclaimed criminal drama Miami Vice.

Berger spent most of his Formula One career racing for Scuderia Ferrari and was one of several notable individuals who possessed a Testarossa, including Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson, and Elton John.
