Manchester mother contacts daughter in Gaza after days apart

  • Gaza communication restored
  • Safety amid bombing
  • Educator reunites with family

On Friday night, all communication in Gaza was severed due to the territory’s intense Israeli bombardment. Presently, communications have resumed in the area.

A Manchester-based educator stranded in Gaza has reconnected with her mother and sister, with whom she had no communication for nearly two days.

Safety Amidst Chaos

Zaynab Wandawi stated over the phone that she was “alive and safe” on Sunday morning, despite the “intense bombing and firing” that was occurring thereafter.

Her sister, Esma, was relieved to hear Zaynab’s voice for the first time since Thursday evening when she was added to the call.

Zaynab informed her sister, “Everyone is secure, including myself. Due to the severed internet connection, we have been unable to communicate with you. Kindly reassure your mother of my well-being and heartfelt affection; I anticipate my return home in the near future, inshallah (God willing).

On Friday night, all communication was severed in Gaza due to the territory’s intense Israeli bombardment.

Residents were isolated from the outside world, from one another, and from contacting emergency services. However, over the weekend, internet and phone service was progressively restored.

Mother’s Agonizing Wait

Mother Lalah Ali Faten stated Zaynab was “living in a nightmare” and the quiet was “harrowing and extremely traumatic.”

However, upon learning that her daughter was safe and sound, she sobbed uncontrollably and declared that it “brought some peace.”

“It’s an immense relief to hear and to know that she got through one of the heaviest phases of bombing in the Gaza Strip,” according to her.

Nonetheless, the absence of bomb shelters and safe havens in the vicinity “very concerned” her.

Challenges and Insufficient Assistance

On the phone call, Zaynab spoke of bombardment from Israel around them.

“Constant gunfire is audible; it escalated significantly on Sunday morning, and they are targeting not only the north but also the borders.” “Everyone is gathered in one residence, awaiting the opportunity to depart as soon as possible,” she explained.

Ms. Faten said the Foreign Office ordered the family to go to southern Gaza near Rafah.

“Based on the videos she sent me, there is destruction of buildings all around where they are staying and on the border as well.”

According to Zaynab, assistance has been insufficient.

“The Foreign Office stated that the IDF would increase their bombing and firing. But they made no effort to assist us in leaving Gaza and returning to the United Kingdom.” “They have proven to be ineffective and should retract their finger,” she stated.
