Man, woman arrested; 34 bodies found at funeral

  • Bodies moved for identification
  • Two arrested; investigation ongoing
  • Public hotline overwhelmed

According to the police, the remains have been transferred to a mortuary, where formal identification procedures will commence.

Two individuals have been detained in connection with the investigation into a funeral director in northern England.

Humberside Police stated that a man, 46, and a woman, 23, were arrested on suspicion of obstructing a lawful and dignified burial, fraud by false representation, and fraud by abuse of position.

They reported that 34 bodies had been “respectfully transported” from one of the three branches of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors to a mortuary in Hull for formal identification procedures in response to concerns regarding “storage and management processes associated with the care of the deceased.”

Both of the detained individuals are still in police custody.

Cordons remain in effect at all three Legacy branches—two in Hull and one in Beverley. The remains, which are currently being identified, were transported from the location on Hessle Road.

On Wednesday, police conducted raids at the three locations in response to reports of concern.

Since its inauguration on Friday, a designated phone line for the public’s inquiries has been flooded with over 350 calls.

“Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin stated, “Each call we receive is being meticulously evaluated and processed by a specialized team to gain a comprehensive comprehension of the circumstances surrounding each family.”

We assure you that we will respond as quickly as possible.

He added that personnel and officers are operating “around the clock” to address the unprecedented inquiries. Family liaison officers continue to assist affected families during what we recognize as a profoundly distressing period for all parties involved.

Mr. McLoughlin acknowledged the timing of the arrests. He stated, “On Mother’s Day, in particular, and on behalf of all of our police officers and staff, our deepest condolences to the families impacted by this incident today.”

He added that updates would be provided without compromising the ongoing investigation.

He stated, “Permit me to take this opportunity to remind the public to treat bereaved families and their loved ones in our community with the utmost privacy and respect.”

The Legacy Independent Funeral Directors website states that the company was founded in 2010 and is operated by a family. It has yet to provide a public statement.
