Lionesses vs. United States is England’s hottest ticket at the new Wembley.

On Friday, the Lionesses’ match against the world champions, the United States, was the fastest-selling England match – men’s or women’s – at the new Wembley.

Two days after England’s victory over Germany in the Euros final, on 2 August, tickets went on sale and sold out in less than 24 hours.

In 2007, tickets for the inaugural England match at the new Wembley were sold differently, with a poll held for the men’s team’s match against Brazil. Those in charge of selling tickets for the USA game compared the rate of sales to that of a large concert.

The England men’s team has played 85 times at the new Wembley, while the women’s team has played four times: twice against Germany in friendlies, once against Northern Ireland in World Cup qualification, and once in the Euros final.

The enormous demand caused the Football Association’s website to crash, and more than 50,000 supporters were forced to wait hours in online queues.

Eight months after defeating England 2-1 in the semi-finals of the World Cup in France with goals from Carli Lloyd and Christen Press, the hosts secured a 2-0 triumph at home.
