Australia defeated England to claim the Netball World Cup for the twelfth time, prolonging England’s wait for a first championship.

After a 13-13 tie in the first quarter, Australia pulled clear and never looked back, claiming a 61-45 victory.

It was England’s first appearance in the World Cup final, but they were unable to repeat Thursday’s victory over the Diamonds.

Instead, the Roses leave Cape Town with silver in the World Cup.

Dejected England may not have won the tournament, but they have equaled the nation’s highest finish at a round-robin tournament, which was accomplished in 1975.

England beat the Diamonds 56-55 earlier in the week, but a repeat performance against a World Cup finalist looked unlikely.

Australia lost some of its glamour after England won the 2018 Commonwealth gold on the Gold Coast.

The Diamonds ended England’s Commonwealth challenge in last year’s semi-finals in Birmingham, and this World Cup final is the latest twist in a burgeoning rivalry that so frequently favors Australia.

Despite Australia’s continued reign atop the global netball rankings, England’s participation in the championship game and Jamaica’s bronze-medal victory over New Zealand earlier on Sunday demonstrate the strength of the chasing pack.
