A new treatment for erectile dysfunction that works within ten minutes has been lauded as a ‘breakthrough’.

Eroxon is the first topical gel for impotence that has demonstrated efficacy in clinical trials and is available over the counter.

Today, it will be available over-the-counter at Boots in the United Kingdom and Ireland, both in-store and online, for £24.99 for four single-use formulations.

The gel is an alternative to conventional treatments such as Viagra, which comes in pill form, can take up to an hour to take effect, and is not appropriate for all males.

Eroxon improved erectile function in 63% of 250 men in a phase 3 clinical trial.

61% of men improved in a second phase 3 trial of 47 men over 24 weeks.

During clinical trials involving men with moderate to severe ED, very few adverse effects were reported. Included among these were migraines, nausea, and skin irritation.

Eroxon operates in a novel manner. Components in the gel dissipate, causing the penis to rapidly cool and stimulating the nerve endings.

A secondary, delayed warming action activates neurotransmitters further, resulting in the production of nitric oxide.

Nitric oxide relaxes penis erectile tissues, allowing blood to flow and stiffening them.

In 60 percent of the studies, an erection occurred within 10 minutes of applying Eroxon gel to the penis’s tip.

Eroxon, like Viagra, which was initially developed to treat angina, was discovered by accident.

Scientists at Futura Medical, the UK-based pharmaceutical company behind the treatment, investigated whether gel formulations of angina medication could be used as an erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment.

They employed a fast-evaporating gel as a placebo in clinical experiments.

However, results demonstrated that gel alone was equally as efficacious as angina gel.

TV doctor and EEDIP consultant Dr. Hilary Jones said, “Eroxon is a breakthrough for sexual health.

The rapid action of Eroxon gel guarantees that sexual spontaneity is maintained.

Previous interventions for erectile dysfunction can take up to an hour to take effect, posing a threat to intimacy.

In addition, studies indicate that nearly half of the males have stopped using them.

Professor David Ralph, consultant urologist and former President of the European Society of Sexual Medicine, stated, “The efficacy of Eroxon is remarkable and approaches the efficacy of current first-line therapy but with substantially fewer adverse events.”

PDE-5 inhibitors, which include Viagra’s sildenafil, are the most common treatment for erectile dysfunction.

They function by increasing blood vessel dilation and inhibiting PDE-5, the enzyme responsible for erection decline, thereby prolonging nitric oxide.

Viagra cannot be taken by anyone with heart problems or low blood pressure.

Viagra takes at least 30 minutes to take effect, and possibly longer if the individual has consumed it recently.

According to the NHS, ‘common’ adverse effects include headache, facial flushing, and vertigo.

Various creams and gels that claim to assist males in the bedroom are available, but their efficacy is either unproven or requires a prescription, such as Vitaros cream, which also dilates blood vessels.

Studies indicate that ED affects up to 50 percent of men over the age of 40. Aging-related conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension are underlying causes.

But psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, tension, or performance anxiety can be significant and are more frequently the cause of erectile dysfunction in younger men, who are increasingly presenting with the condition.

A 2023 Omnibus survey of over 1,000 ED patients and their companions revealed that fifty percent of men have a sense of failure and fifteen percent avoid sex as a result.
