Death of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama

  • Dragon Ball creator lauded
  • Akira Toriyama passes away
  • Legacy endures globally

Dragon Ball, one of the most influential and best-selling Japanese comics of all time, was written by a 68-year-old author.

His studio announced on Friday that Akira Toriyama had suffered an acute subdural hematoma, a bleeding near the brain.

Dragon Ball is a top-rated comic book series that has also been adapted into animated and cinematic works.

Mr. Toriyama has been lauded by his devotees for developing characters who have indelibly shaped their youth.

In 1984, the Dragon Ball comic book series debuted. It chronicles the journey of a young child named Son Goku as he gathers magical dragon balls to defend Earth against Saiyan alien humanoids.

Unfinished works accompanied Mr. Toriyama at the moment of his demise.

His funeral was witnessed by only his family and a handful of friends, according to a statement on the Dragon Ball website held on March 1.

“He would accomplish numerous additional objectives.” “However, he has bequeathed to the world numerous manga titles and works of art,” his studio stated.

It was further stated that we hope Akira Toriyama’s unique universe of creation remains adored by all for an extended period.

Supporters expressed their condolences via social media.

“I appreciate you crafting a manga that symbolizes my youth. “Rest in peace, and thank you for your diligent effort,” read a post that received an immediate 500 likes on X.

“It is too soon and tragic,” another Japanese X user wrote.

“His legacy shall endure indefinitely.” Another user expressed gratitude for creating the most iconic anime character of all time, Akira.

Mr. Toriyama, born in Nagoya, Japan 1955, made his comic book debut in the early 1980s with the novel Dr. Slump, which follows the adventures of Arale, a young female robot and her scientist creator.

Dragon Ball, however, was his most renowned achievement. Son Goku’s transformation from a child who struggles with martial arts to a high-flying hero capable of launching bolts of electricity from his palms represents, for many fans, their struggles with self-doubt as they mature.

From Japan to China and Southeast Asia, Dragon Ball action figures are a mainstay in toy stores, and the animated adaptation has been converted into many languages.

Mr. Toriyama stated in a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper Asahi that he had “no idea” how Dragon Ball gained such worldwide popularity.

“Given that it helped someone like me, who has twisted, difficult personalities, do a decent job and gain acceptance into society,” he said, comparing the series to a miracle.

“At the time of creating the series, my sole objective was to satisfy young boys in Japan,” he told the news agency AFP.
