Swift or deep floodwaters will likely threaten human lives.

When flooding or lightning strikes occur, train and bus delays and cancellations are probable.

Spray and unexpected flooding may result in hazardous driving conditions and road closures.

If highways flood, it’s possible that some settlements will be cut off.

There will certainly be power outages, and other services to some homes and businesses may be interrupted.

Parts of southwest England’s highways were flooded on Tuesday, the second day of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The strong rain follows weeks of drought conditions; when the earth is too dry, it cannot absorb the rain quickly enough, thus the water floods the countryside.

The Met Office reported that Monday marked the eighth straight day in which temperatures reached 30 degrees Celsius (86F).
