Sachdev may replace Staunton, fired Post Office chairman

  • Neil Sachdev considered for Post Office interim chair role
  • Selection process includes interviews with multiple candidates
  • Appointment critical amidst Post Office leadership, funding issues

Kemi Badenoch is considering a limited number of candidates, including Neil Sachdev, the chairman of the state-owned Land Registry, for the position of interim chair of the Post Office.

Ministers are contemplating the chairman of the Land Registry as a possible successor to Henry Staunton, the departing chairman of the Post Office, who was removed from his position earlier this year.

Neil Sachdev is one of a few final candidates vying for the position of interim chair of the Post Office.

According to industry sources, the Department for Business and Trade is believed to have interviewed Mr. Sachdev, the chairman of the East-West Railway Company, and at least one candidate with experience in the private sector.

One source claimed that ministers were eager to finalize the appointment within weeks despite the controversy surrounding the compensation schemes established for hundreds of Horizon IT scandal-affected sub-post managers.

They added that should the interim chair possess a successful initial term, they would be regarded as a leading candidate to assume the position permanently.

The business secretary, Kemi Badenoch, was pressuring Mr. Staunton to resign from his position amidst Whitehall concerns regarding corporate governance issues at the state-owned company.

In the following weeks, profound rifts were revealed between the Post Office board and the government, as well as within the Post Office.

Mr. Staunton testified before members of parliament last month that an inquiry had been initiated into the behavior of Nick Read, the chief executive of the Post Office.

After the publication of the investigation’s report next month, Post Office insiders anticipate that Mr. Read’s future will be questioned unless he is forgiven.

The investigation was initiated after Kevin Hollinrake, the minister of the Post Office, testified before the House of Commons that Mr. Read had allegedly demanded a doubling of his salary and threatened to resign if his demands were not fulfilled.

The governance disputes have diverted attention away from the government’s urgent endeavors to gain control over the broader Post Office scandal.

Ministers declared the introduction of unprecedented legislation this month, which would vacate all convictions in England and Wales stemming from the Horizon crisis.

It is anticipated that the measure will become law in the summer.

The individual selected for the position of Post Office chair will significantly impact resolving leadership issues at the organization’s highest levels and negotiating with government representatives regarding the organization’s future funding needs.

Since 2022, Mr. Sachdev has presided over the Land Registry, which is also under government ownership.

In addition to chairing the Defence Infrastructure Organisation board for the Ministry of Defence, he has presided over Network Rail Property Limited as a non-executive director.

His reputation among his former coworkers was that of a “solid” operator who was an obvious choice for the Post Office.

However, the probability of him securing the role compared to the other candidates involved remained uncertain.

UK Government Investments (UKGI) oversees the government’s ownership interest in Post Office Limited. UKGI is additionally tasked with managing public investments in Channel 4, the Met Office, and various other state-owned enterprises.

The Post Office, financially dependent on government funding, has encountered difficulties recently due to increased competition in its industry sectors.

On Friday, the Department of Business still needs to respond to a request for comment regarding the chair appointment procedure.
