Joan Sydney, who starred in A Country Practice and Neighbours, has passed away at the age of 83.
The British-Australian actress passed away at her home in Sydney on Wednesday after a lengthy illness.
Yesterday, her longtime friend and co-actor Sally-Anne Upton revealed her passing on Facebook.
In the 1980s, Ms. Sydney portrayed Margaret Sloan, a no-nonsense matron, on A Country Practice.
She was nominated for Australia’s most outstanding actress for the role at the annual Logie Awards for television in 1989.
She joined the cast of Neighbours as Valda Sheergold in 2002.
Born in London, Ms. Sydney grew raised in Wales. She received her acting training at the Oldham Repertory Theatre.
At the age of 21, she made her screen debut in the 1957 film adaptation of the English play When We Are Married. In 1965, she emigrated to Perth before relocating to New South Wales.
On social media, admirers and other artists paid tribute to the late actor.
Ms. Upton, who starred with Ms. Sydney in her final television production, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, wrote, “Thank you for everything you’ve taught me: love, friendship, and countless memories that will be cherished forever.”
Also starring in A Country Practice, Shane Withington tweeted: “Comedy is never as simple as it appears, but this woman made it appear effortless. I cherished her.”
