Thursday, a Land Rover collided with The Study Preparatory School on Camp Road in Wimbledon, killing 8-year-old Selena Lau. Another eight-year-old girl is in critical condition, as is a woman in her forties.
A girl of eight years old perished after a Land Rover crashed into a primary school in southwest London.
Thursday’s incident at The Study Preparatory School on Camp Road in Wimbledon resulted in 16 individuals being treated at the scene and 10 more being transported to a hospital.
The victim has been identified by the Metropolitan Police as Selena Lau.
According to a family statement, Selena was an intelligent and mischievous child who was adored and loved by all. The family requests that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.”
Friday’s memorial at the scene read, “Dear Selena, you will always be our shining icon. We will greatly mourn you.”
The memo was decorated with a picture of a star and kisses.
A girl of eight years old and a woman in her forties remain in critical condition in the hospital.
A seven-month-old infant was also injured in the collision.
A 46-year-old woman was released on bail after being detained at the scene on suspicion of causing death by reckless driving.
A picnic blanket on a schoolyard table suggests a prize-giving event occurred during the crash.
Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland of the Metropolitan Police shed tears and lost her voice as she described the collision on Thursday afternoon during a news conference.
Stephen Hammond, a member of Parliament for Wimbledon, remarked after the death was verified, “What a tragic incident – on the last day of school, this young girl has tragically lost her life.”
The private school for girls aged four to eleven is located on Wimbledon Common, less than a mile from the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which conducts the world-renowned tennis tournament.
It is believed that the vehicle struck the section of the school housing females aged four to eight.
In a statement released on Thursday, the school said, “We are profoundly horrified by the tragic accident at Wilberforce House this morning and devastated that it has claimed the life of one of our young students and injured several others”.
During this terrible period, our thoughts are with the bereaved family and the families of those injured.
“It is still far too early to completely comprehend what transpired. But we are well aware that this tragic event will have a significant impact on our students and their families”.
Our top goal is their well-being, especially injured ones.
“Now that a police investigation is underway, we will not be making any further public statements for the time being, and we ask that our school’s community’s privacy be respected during this deeply troubling time.”
On Thursday, numerous tributes were left at the scene.
One inscription reads: “To The Study and parents. So regretful for the school and the family’s tragic loss. Always in our minds”
Someone else expressed, “Our thoughts and prayers are with you all on this tragic day.”
Ian Hewitt, chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis Club, was among the Friday flower-layers at the school.
He told reporters, “We feel a strong connection to the community.”
What a tragic occurrence. We simply extend our deepest condolences to all those afflicted.”
Detective Chief Superintendent Clair Kelland, the local police superintendent for southwest London, stated that officers were doing “all that we can” to assist families.
She stated, “It is difficult to imagine the pain and distress the families of those involved are experiencing.”
