A 16-year-old boy who wore a red dress to his high school prom described it as “unreal” that it has been viewed over seven million times on social media.
Students and faculty at Archbishop Sancroft High School in Harleston, Norfolk, greeted Korben’s entrance in a sequined tuxedo and ballgown skirt with loud cheers.
His mother, Nina Green, tweeted a photo and expressed her immense pride that he was being himself.
It sends the message that you can be whoever you want to be, according to Korben.
Mrs. Green stated that she wanted to show him “living his best life” and had no idea that her message of positivity would “go crazy” in the manner in which it has.
She said, “As soon as he got out of the car, everyone cheered and I was crying, as were some of the teachers because he was being himself.”
“Everyone has been extremely supportive, and his class has been phenomenal.
“If you allow your child to be who they are, you will only get the best from them.
There are still people in the world who do not comprehend, but the feeling of acceptance is incomparable.
I am so pleased for him.
The following day, as they were traveling to Pride in London, Mrs. Green’s phone went “nuts.”
Her tweet has been retweeted more than 4,000 times, including by one of Korben’s idols, Michelle Visage of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, who called him a “star”
Visage’s sharing of photographs of Korben, said Korben, was “very surreal.”
“She is such an icon, a wonderful celebrity, and I admire her so much,” he said.
Mrs. Green stated, “When I showed Korben the retweet, he was floored; he was so ecstatic.”
Amazingly, we also received retweets from H from Steps and Dr. Ranj.
Then, during Pride, someone in the parade approached him and asked, ‘Are you the boy in the red dress?’ I think you’re incredible.
Mrs. Green stated that Korben has always enjoyed wearing dresses and has performed as the “sassy” drag queen Miss Frou Frou since his early teens.
She added that when it came to his prom, he wanted Miss Frou Frou to stay at home.
“He wished to go as himself while expressing his feminine side by wearing a tuxedo on top and a dress on the bottom, influenced heavily by [American actor] Billy Porter.
He desired to be Korben but dressed as a woman.
She added that the subsequent response has been “incredible,” with one parent contacting Mrs. Green for advice on how to support her son, who recently came out as gay.
“I just wanted to show other parents that it’s okay,” she explained.
“I believe it is crucial to fly the flag for those who do not receive the same support as he does.
“I sincerely hope that it will encourage others to be more accepting, let proud parents know they are not alone and that they can celebrate their children, and let young people know there is a support network available if they need it.
“Parents must accept their children as they are”.
