Unveiled by the Royal Mint is a new collectible coin bearing the image of the late pop icon, George Michael.
Michael, who was born and raised in Hertfordshire, and Andrew Ridgeley, a fellow student at Bushey Meads School, established the group Wham!
An engraved headshot of Michael, sporting his signature eyeglasses and the chorus from his song “Faith,” comprise the collectible.
Black and crimson, prominently featured on a portion of the coin, reflect their significance in his career.
George Michael Entertainment described the tribute from the Royal Mint, Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, as “deeply humbling.”
Furthermore, the performer would have been “extremely honoured and sincerely moved that a national institution decided to honour his memory in this manner,” the statement continued.
After 39 years since its initial release, the band’s “Last Christmas” peaked at number one on the UK singles chart in December.
Sandra Deiana, the designer of the coin, described her desire for “a detailed portrait that captured his charismatic countenance.” In particular, she thought of his renowned spectacles.
George Michael’s Legacy Honoured
The coin will be the most recent addition to the Music Legends series by the Royal Mint, which has previously honoured Queen, David Bowie, and Elton John.
In the 1970s, Michael and his family relocated from Edgware, London, where they had spent their childhood, to Radlett, Hertfordshire.

He had been a resident of Goring, Oxfordshire, at the time of his passing in 2016.
The singer-songwriter is commemorated at Bushey Meads School with a blue plaque.
Bushey’s George Michael Appreciation Society member Steve Stunt said he had frequently asked the Royal Mint for a collectible coin. The coin features the performer in recent years.
He said, “I think it’s incredible; it’s something we can all cherish, and the recognition from the Royal Mint is phenomenal.”
