  • The storm triggered power outages, landslides, and displaced thousands in northern Vietnam and the Philippines
  • Vietnam evacuated 50,000 people and mobilized military forces to mitigate the storm’s impact

Yagi caused landslides and heavy floods in the Philippines earlier this week before hitting northern Vietnam on Saturday.

A so-called Super Typhoon killed at least four people in northern Vietnam after also hitting China and the Philippines, raising the total death toll to 22.

The storm hit northern Vietnam at around 1pm (7 am UK time) on Saturday, with gusts gusting up to 99mph (160kph) around its center.

A day earlier, winds gusted to 145 mph (234 kph) in Hainan, south China.

According to official media, four people died and 78 were injured, with at least a dozen more missing at sea.

Yagi has already killed at least two people in Hainan and 16 in the Philippines, the first country it struck earlier this week.

Haiphong, Vietnam’s industrial hub on the northern coast, was among the hardest impacted, with widespread power outages, waves up to three meters high, and powerful winds that destroyed windows.

The footage shows fallen trees, street posts, and roofing material littering the streets.

Similar damage was recorded in Hainan, which has a population of over 10 million people when electricity was turned off to over 800,000 houses.

Meanwhile, Yagi caused landslides and massive flooding in the Philippines on Wednesday, affecting around 2.3 million people in the northern and central regions.

Over 22,200 individuals were displaced from their houses, and domestic flights were interrupted for many days.

Despite appearing to be more prepared, Vietnam’s government evacuated over 50,000 people from coastal areas and mobilized 450,000 military personnel before Yagi’s arrival.

Four airports ceased operations for several hours, canceling almost 300 flights, and public transportation was also halted.

Typhoon Shanshan, the biggest storm to hit Japan in decades, made landfall in southwestern Japan last week.

Yagi is called after the Japanese word for goat and the constellation Capricornus.
