As families traveling south in donkey carts, automobiles, and trucks carrying their belongings continue to besiege territory, Israeli airstrikes persist. Hamas asserts that an assault on a fleeing convoy has claimed the lives of 70 individuals, primarily women and children.

Israel Extends Safe Passage

In anticipation of a ground assault, Israel has extended time-limited safe passage to over a million Palestinians who were ordered to evacuate northern Gaza while the military conducted “local raids.”

Despite warnings from the United Nations and aid organizations that a forced evacuation would have catastrophic humanitarian consequences, including the immobilization of hospital patients and others, the mass exodus occurred.

Israel has now extended the evacuation deadline, permitting Gazans to travel safely south along two major roads between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. local time (8 a.m. and 2 p.m. UK time) on two main roads.

As besieged families traveled south from Gaza City in automobiles, trucks, and donkey carts carrying their belongings, Israeli airstrikes persisted in the region.

Seventy individuals, primarily women and children, were slain, according to Hamas, in an assault on a fleeing convoy.

The identity of the target of the airstrikes and the presence of militants among the passengers remained uncertain at the outset.

IDF Raids and Ground Operations

The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) reported that its soldiers conducted raids into Gaza to combat insurgents and locate over 120 civilians who were abducted during the IDF’s surprise attack on southern Israel last weekend.

Israel has declared for the first time that ground forces have been conducting operations within the enclave.

According to Israeli media, the remains of individuals who were reported missing in the assault of the previous week were discovered during IDF raids.

In addition, the military reported that several militants attempting to cross from Lebanon were slain by a drone strike.

Israel’s military has been conducting retaliatory airstrikes against Gaza, specifically Hamas, for almost a week. This comes after the governing Palestinian militant organization stormed the border over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Israelis in their homes and 260 others at a music festival.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have claimed the lives of 2,269 individuals, including thousands more injured and hundreds of women and children.

Israel reported that since Saturday’s surprise raid, 1,300 of its citizens have been killed, and its forces continue to amass along the barbed wire fence in preparation for a potential ground offensive on Gaza; 360,000 reservists have been mobilized.

To “save their lives,” Palestinians were instructed to evacuate to the southern portion of the territory across the Wadi Gaza, a river-cut coastal wetland.

Hamas militants, on the other hand, have pledged to fight and urged locals to remain, cautioning them against “falling” for “fake propaganda.”

The United Nations had requested that the evacuation order be revoked to prevent “an already tragic situation from becoming a catastrophe.”

Early on Saturday morning, Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, a spokesperson for the Israeli military, stated, “We have observed a significant movement of Palestinian civilians towards the south.”

“Information, Israeli reserve soldiers are preparing for the subsequent phase of operations in the vicinity of the Gaza Strip.”

“They are all around the Gaza Strip, in the south, in the center, and in the north, and they are preparing themselves for whatever target they get, whatever task.”

Although Israel has garnered considerable support and sympathy in the wake of the Hamas attacks, its response has also incited considerable discontent.

This weekend, pro-Palestinian demonstrations are also anticipated to take place worldwide, including in London and other regions of the United Kingdom. This has raised apprehensions regarding the possibility of confrontations involving counter-protests in support of Israel.

International Protests and Concerns

An official from the Crown Prosecution Service stated, “Before the scheduled demonstrations concerning recent occurrences in the Middle East, we have been collaborating extensively with law enforcement.”

“The CPS will also have additional personnel available to offer charging advice around the clock if the police request it this weekend.”

Individuals have the right to lawful protest but if any behavior goes beyond that into an offense which meets our legal test, we will not hesitate to authorize criminal charges.

In another region, Israel’s Arab neighbors have rejected American efforts to establish a humanitarian corridor through which civilians could leave Gaza safely.

Jordan, which is adjacent to the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and Egypt, the only Arab state to share a border with Gaza, have both issued warnings against the expulsion of Palestinians from the territory on which they intend to establish a future state.

The concept evokes memories of the 1948 “Nakba,” or “catastrophe,” in which a large number of Palestinians were compelled to flee or be evicted from their residences.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al Sisi said, “This pertains to all Arabs and is the root of all causes.”

“It is important that the (Palestinian) people remain steadfast and present on their land.”
