- Joey Essex joins Love Island as the first celebrity contestant
- Essex hopes to find love, feeling “extremely single”
- Host Maya Jama emphasizes unexpected twists in the show
Essex, who purportedly decided to apply to the show, has expressed his hope that he will depart the island “hand in hand with the love of my life.”
Joey Essex, a reality television personality, has become the inaugural celebrity contestant to compete in the Love Island villa.
The 33-year-old, who achieved fame on The Only Way Is Essex, has stated that he is participating in the programme due to his current state of being “extremely single” and his aspiration to depart the island “hand in hand with the love of my life.”
On Monday, the ITV dating series returned, welcoming additional contestants to the villa in Majorca, Spain. Host Maya Jama made an entrance in a white dress.
Jama informed the contestants, “It is reassuring to see that you have all settled in. As you know, Love Island is where the unexpected is always present.”
“So please welcome Joey”
The television personality declared himself “the king of Essex” and desired to locate his “queen.”
According to ITV, he is the “first celebrity contestant” of the programme.
As reported by The Sun, Essex himself applied to participate in the programme before ITV executives’ efforts to conceal his participation.
Essex, in an exclusive interview with the newspaper before departing for the villa, said, “I feel like Joey Bond, ‘the name’s Essex, Joey Essex.'” Completing the application procedure and reaching this point was reminiscent of a military operation, not the journey itself. Right now, I am exceedingly solitary, and I am hoping that I will depart the villa with the love of my life. This is my primary objective and the sole thing I am concerned with.
Essex was a guest on various similar programmes, such as Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, Celebrity MasterChef, Celebs Go Dating and Dancing On Ice, after his appearances on The Only Way Is Essex from 2011 to 2013.
In 2005, Love Island was introduced as Celebrity Love Island, featuring contestants such as Calum Best, Rebecca Loos, and Lee Sharpe. A second series was broadcast in 2006, and in 2015, a reimagined version of the programme was introduced without celebrities.
Jama informed the other contestants before Essex’s appearance on Love Island that “First impressions matter.” Dear boys and girls, I would like you to rank each other in order of your assessment of who appears to be the most suitable for a romantic relationship, from the most romantic to the least romantic.
Next, Jama disclosed that the rankings would determine their partners.
Mimii Ngulube, 24, a mental health nurse from Portsmouth, and Munveer Jabbal, 30, a recruitment manager from Surbiton, were among the couples. Nicole Samuel, 24, an accounts manager from Aberdare, and Sean Stone, 24, a merchant from Hertford, were also involved.

The other partners were Samantha Kenny, 26, a make-up artist from Liverpool, and Sam Taylor, 23, a hairstylist from Chesterfield. Harriett Blackmore, 24, a dancer and personal shopper from Brighton, and Ciaran Davies, 21, a Pencoed, South Wales surveyor, were also involved. Jess White, 25, a retail manager from Stockport, and semi-professional footballer Ronnie Vint, 27, were both from London.
Ayo Odukoya, 25, a model from Canning Town, and Patsy Field, 29, an office administrator from Orpington, were also united.
Patsy, who was born with Erb’s palsy, a paralysis of the arm caused by injury to the upper group of the arm’s primary nerves as a result of a problematic birth, recently disclosed that she shares her bed with her mother.
She clarified that her mother did not have a designated area in her residence for her to reside in except for the same room.
Ciaran later confessed to “being with” a woman over the age of 40 when he was 18.
