According to emergency services, a newborn infant was killed by a Russian missile hit on a maternity hospital in the southern Ukrainian region of Zaporizhzhia.

The lone women in the facility at the time, the baby’s mother, and a doctor were rescued from the rubble.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, accused Russia of bringing “horror and bloodshed” to his country.

The territory of Zaporizhzhya, where an important nuclear reactor is located, has been the target of numerous Russian strikes.

Overnight, according to Ukrainian emergency services, Russian missiles damaged the maternity wing of a hospital in the Ukrainian-held city of Vilnyansk, near the frontline.

The entire Zaporizhzhia region is claimed by Russia as a result of self-proclaimed referendums staged in September.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian officials reported that two persons were killed in a shelling attack on a residential structure in Kupiansk, a September-retaken town in the Kharkiv region.

After both attacks, President Zelensky accused Russia of attempting “to achieve with terror and murder what it had been unable to do on the battlefield for nine months.”

During the nine-month conflict, Russia has attacked multiple medical institutions, including a maternity facility in Mariupol in March when three people, including a child, were killed.

Russia stated at the time that the incident was manufactured.

On Wednesday, the UK Ministry of Defence stated that Russian commanders were likely using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) manufactured in Iran to “prioritize medical institutions as targets of opportunity and hit them with guided missiles if discovered.

Russia occupies portions of the greater Zaporizhzhia region, including the nuclear reactor, which was taken by the Russian military weeks following Moscow’s 24 February invasion of Ukraine.

In September, Russia annexed Zaporizhzhia and another Ukrainian land but has since been pushed back on the battlefield in the south, particularly in the Kherson region. The two armies face off across the Dnieper River.
