- UK deploys personnel for NATO exercise
- Concerns about Russian invasion
- UK supports Ukraine against Putin
The Defence Secretary is expected to announce the deployment of personnel from the army, navy, and RAF to the Steadfast Defender military exercise, spanning 31 nations in Europe, in a speech today.
The United Kingdom plans to send 20,000 personnel to one of NATO’s most extensive military exercises since the Cold War. Defence Secretary Grant Shapps is expected to announce today where the alliance will practice repelling a Russian invasion.
Mr. Shapps will state in his speech that personnel from the Army, Navy, and RAF will participate in the 31-nation Steadfast Defender exercise to provide “vital reassurance against the menace” posed by Vladimir Putin.
In an address at Lancaster House, the Defence Secretary will also warn that the West is at a “crossroads.” He will reveal the United Kingdom’s contribution to the war exercises.
Mr. Shapps reiterated the warnings of his cabinet colleague Lord Cameron, who stated on Sunday that “the global dashboard is illuminated in blood red” due to “so much peril, insecurity, and instability in the world.”
The Defence Secretary stated, “In addition to state actors, such as the Putins and Iran of the world, there are now also non-state actors, such as the type of terrorism that emerged at the turn of the century, which involves individual actors.”
“Because of this, the world has become more difficult and unstable.” “That is the central theme of my speech this morning.”
UK’s Military Preparedness Plan
Mr. Shapps will outline his vision for how the United Kingdom will retaliate against potential threats as allies continue to be concerned about the threat posed by the Kremlin and the Ukraine conflict enters its second year.
He is anticipated to deliver the following address: “In this new era, we must be ready to defend our nation, lead our allies, and deter our adversaries whenever needed.
“At present, our adversaries are occupied with the reconstruction of their fortifications, the reawakening of former foes, the delineation of battlefront lines (with tanks grazing on Ukraine’s lawn), and the fundamental pillars of the international order are dislodged.” “We are situated at a juncture.”
Starting next month, the British Army will send 16,000 Eastern European soldiers along with tanks, artillery, and helicopters.
The Royal Navy will disperse over 2,000 personnel across eight warships and submarines. The RAF will utilize Poseidon P-8 surveillance aircraft and F-35B Lightning attack aircraft.
According to defense sources, the exercise will prepare for the invasion of a member state by any aggressor. However, the primary concerns at hand pertain to Russia and terrorism.
“Much more must be done to ensure our safety.”
Admiral Rob Bauer, chairman of the NATO Military Committee, commented at a press conference last September: “Steadfast Defender, the alliance’s largest collective defense exercise since the end of the Cold War, will be conducted in 2024.
Allies Strengthen NATO Commitments
Over 40,000 alliance personnel will exercise in Germany, Poland, and the Baltics.
He further stated that a new era of collective defense has arrived. Furthermore, NATO military authorities have spent years preparing for this era. We are more prepared than ever before.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak paid an unannounced visit to Kyiv on Friday to disclose an additional £2.5 billion in support for Ukraine in 2024–25, representing a £200 million increase over the preceding two years. Mr. Shapp’s announcement follows this.
Additionally, Mr. Sunak and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy endorsed a new security accord wherein the United Kingdom pledges to deliver “immediate and continuous” aid to Ukraine in the event of another Russian assault.
Since hostilities began, the UK has given Ukraine approximately £12 billion in aid, the prime minister said.
Mr. Sunak said, “Ukraine is not and never will be alone.” The UK would support Ukraine.
Putin may believe he has the upper hand, but it needs to be corrected.
