About 100 firemen are battling a fire at Somerset House in downtown London.
A pillar of smoke was spotted emerging from the roof of the historic stately residence on the Strand. The London Fire Brigade received the initial call about the fire at 11:59 a.m. on Saturday.
The London Fire Brigade said 15 fire engines had been dispatched to quell the blaze.
It further stated that “around 100” firefighters were on the site, with personnel from Soho, Dowgate, Islington, and adjacent fire stations present.
A brigade official stated, “Crews are battling flames on a portion of the building’s roof.” Two of the Brigade’s 32-meter ladders have been dispatched to assist firefighting.

“The entire site at Somerset House is now closed to the public while we fight the fire,” the official said. Traffic in the surrounding area will be impacted as crews respond.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
