The Extinction Rebellion offshoot claims the eateries it targeted are “representative of a failing system.”
The restaurant in Knightsbridge that is operated by the controversial chef Salt Bae has been targeted by activists.
Animal Rebellion, a branch of Extinction Rebellion, advocates for a “plant-based food system and massive rewilding.”
They reported that eight persons entered the Nusr-et steakhouse in the upscale central London neighborhood at about 6 p.m. on Saturday and seated at reserved tables.
20-year-old student Ben Thomas said: “These restaurants are emblematic of a failing system.
“Currently, two million people in the United Kingdom rely on food banks, while influential chefs are selling gold-plated steaks for more than £1,000.
We know that steaks and other red meats have the greatest environmental impact.
A video provided by the protest organization showed restaurant personnel carrying a woman out onto the street and leaving her to sit on the curb.
The Metropolitan Police reported that officers were dispatched to the scene just after 6 p.m., but their presence was no longer required because the demonstrators had already fled.
The restaurant, one of more than a dozen Nusr-Et Steakhouse locations worldwide, opened late last year, and its prices immediately shocked diners.
A receipt from one diner was uploaded online shortly after the restaurant’s inauguration, revealing the prices of a rack of lamb for £200, a gigantic tomahawk steak for £630, a Coca-Cola for £9, a Red Bull for £11, sweetcorn for £12, and a “golden burger” for £100.
Nusret Gokce, who rose to internet celebrity in 2017 with a video of him throwing salt theatrically from a height over steak, is the man behind it.
According to Animal Rebellion’s Twitter feed, a demonstration was also held at Manchester’s Mana restaurant “to demand an end to climate disaster, injustice, and animal cruelty via a transition to a plant-based future.”
Just after 9:30 p.m., the footage showed one customer being escorted out of the restaurant by a man wearing a police vest and others.
It follows a similar ploy at Gordon Ramsay’s three-star Michelin restaurant in the Chelsea neighborhood of London.
