A man has been charged following an event in Kent that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and the serious injury of a child, according to police.
Wednesday at around 9:35 p.m., a black Alfa Romeo struck five people, all members of the same family, outside a multi-story parking garage on Leopold Street in Ramsgate.
Yoram Hirshfeld, 78, and his daughter, Noga Hirshfeld, 40, both physicists at Cambridge, were slain, and a young girl of elementary school age sustained significant injuries and is in critical but stable condition in a London hospital.
A man in his forties and a youngster in elementary school suffered minor injuries.
Nitesh Bissendary, 30, of Highlands Glade, Manston, Kent, has been charged with two charges of causing death by reckless driving, two counts of causing serious injury by reckless driving, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
In addition, he was charged with failing to stop at the scene of a traffic accident, driving under the influence of drugs, and failing to produce a sample for analysis.
On Saturday, he will appear before the Margate Magistrates’ Court.
On Thursday evening, a vigil was organized on Leopold Street to honor the family who was on vacation in Ramsgate.
Friends of Mr. Hirshfeld, a former professor of mathematics at Tel Aviv University in Israel, have praised his generosity.
Ms. Hirshfeld, also known as Noga Sella, was a Girl Guides leader in Cambridgeshire with the 2nd Milton Guides and the Milton Rangers.
Officers investigating the incident also detained a 58-year-old male and a 55-year-old woman on charges of aiding a criminal and possessing class A drugs with intent to distribute.
Both were freed on bond until September 8th.
