Sergeant Graham Saville, 46, was characterized by Chief Constable Kate Meynell as a “hugely respected and popular colleague” whose death “has come as an enormous shock to us all.
A police officer was killed by a train while helping a “person in distress” on the tracks.
Just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nottinghamshire Police were summoned to a residential area in Balderton, near Newark-on-Trent, due to concerns for a man’s safety.
Sergeant Graham Saville, a response officer based at the Newark police station, was struck by a train during the incident and transported to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham with severe injuries.
Tuesday, a 46-year-old officer perished in a hospital with his family at his bedside, according to the police department.
As a mark of reverence, flags will be flown at half-staff throughout the force.
It is believed that the 29-year-old individual he was assisting had non-life-threatening injuries.
In a statement, Chief Constable Kate Meynell said, “Today is a day of mourning for the entire police family.”
Sergeant Saville was a “hugely admired and well-liked colleague” whose death “has come as a tremendous shock to us all.”
Ms. Meynell stated that it is “impossible to express how devastating this news is for all those who loved and respected Graham.”
“On Thursday, he went to work to protect the citizens of Nottinghamshire, and it is a testament to his bravery and dedication as a police officer that he was killed while attempting to save the life of another man.”
In addition, she stated, “His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
Locally known as a former police officer, Dan Fletcher launched the crowdfunding campaign over the weekend with an initial goal of £50,000, which has since been increased to £100,000.
Donations had surpassed £ 61,000 by Tuesday evening.
Home Secretary Suella Braverman said, “I offer my deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of Sergeant Graham Saville. Who died after rescuing an individual in distress on a train track”.

British Transport Police (BTP) is also conducting a current investigation into the incident.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the force said, “Investigations confirmed that the officer was struck by a train while responding to an incident involving a man’s welfare.
The 29-year-old male sustained electrocution injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he remains with non-life-threatening injuries.
The British Transport Police Assistant Chief Constable Allan Gregory remarked, “This is awful news for everyone. I would like to extend our deepest condolences to Sergeant Saville’s family and our colleagues at Nottinghamshire Police.”
He added, “Losing an officer in the line of duty is one of the darkest days in policing. And Sergeant Saville’s loved ones will be foremost in our minds throughout our investigations.”
