Mathew Pickering, 49, has been sentenced to a minimum of 17.5 years in a correctional facility. Ms. Dowey’s head was covered with a black rubbish bag when her body was discovered in his downstairs bedroom.

A man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his fiancée.

Mathew Pickering, 49, has been sentenced to a minimum of 17 and a half years in prison in connection with the murder of Georgina Dowey, 46.

Last March, Ms. Dowey had relocated to Pickering’s residence in Neath, near Swansea.

She had lived in a women’s refuge in Barry, near Cardiff, in the past.

The police officers found her remains in the washroom located downstairs on 7 May.

Pickering denied murder while pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Monday marked his sentencing at Swansea Crown Court, where he was convicted following a trial last week.

According to Judge Paul Thomas KC, Ms. Dowey sustained injuries, one of which was a fractured septum.

She was subsequently strangled and covered in a black rubbish sack by Pickering.

“A horrifying manner of passing away”

The judge described Ms. Dowey’s death as a “terrifying manner in which to pass away.”

According to him, Pickering murdered Ms. Dowey in a “jealous rage” after discovering communications from another man on her phone.

The judge stated that Ms. Dowey was “obsessed” with Pickering, whom she had known since primary school.

He further stated that during the initial thirty-six hours following Ms. Dowey’s passing, Pickering proceeded with composure, concealing any indication of something suspicious.

He stated, “You exhibited not the slightest trace of any sentiment resembling remorse, compassionate understanding, or emotion.”

“Your entire conduct during this process has been characterised by indifference and self-interest.”

South Wales Police Detective Inspector David Butt stated that the sentence signified the administration of justice in relation to the murder of Georgina.

He added, “My thoughts continue to be with Georgina’s family, who are understandably devastated by the events that have transpired.”

“I express my gratitude to the witnesses and local community for their invaluable assistance throughout this investigation.”
