The Metropolitan Police have charged five individuals in connection with pro-Palestinian demonstrations in London.

Tens of thousands gathered in the capital on Saturday to protest Israel’s bombardment of Gaza and counterdemonstrations. The force apprehended a total of nine individuals, seven of whom were arrested for alleged public order violations, and two on suspicion of assaulting police officers.

Two additional women were detained on Sunday morning following an incident in Trafalgar Square, on suspicion of inciting racial animosity.

The Metropolitan Police’s (Met) handling of the march, during which over a thousand officers were stationed, has been criticized.

The five individuals accused are:
  • Kadirul Islam, 33, has been charged with a racially aggravated public order offense due to allegations that he yelled racist insults. His address is unknown.
  • Emma Turvey, 51, of Greys, Essex, has been charged with a violation of public order in relation to the alleged throwing of a beer can at a protestor in Whitehall.
  • In response to an officer’s attack and head injuries, Walthamstow’s Atif Sharif, 41, was charged with actual bodily harm.
  • Laura Davis, 22, of Barnet, north London, has been charged with a racially aggravated public order offense in connection with an alleged racist and menacing placard display near Piccadilly Circus.
  • A 16-year-old teenager suspected of verbally abusing demonstrators’ police officers has been charged with public order violations.
