During the winter months, libraries around Devon and a theatre will provide warm areas for individuals.

The Devon County Council stated that its libraries would provide “welcoming, warm environments” and other services to assist those who are trying to make ends meet.

In Plymouth, a council member wants to extend the library’s hours to provide a comfortable space.

The Theatre Royal in Plymouth will also be accessible to anyone unable to pay their heating expenses.

Libraries Unlimited in Devon is in charge of the Libraries For Life program.

Free “surplus food from local supermarkets” will be provided in community refrigerator initiatives at libraries in Devon and Torbay as part of new services.

The most vulnerable will have access to donated winter jackets at the libraries in Barnstaple, Ilfracombe, Exmouth, Totnes, Bideford, Ivybridge, Sidmouth, Seaton, Exeter, and Tiverton.

Roger Croad, the cabinet member for libraries at Devon County Council, stated, “As winter approaches and food and energy costs continue to rise, I’m happy that many libraries are still able to provide support to residents, despite growing costs also hitting them.”

Mark Coker of the Plymouth City Council stated that he hoped Devonport Library will be open six days per week to create a warm area.

Currently, the library is open to the public twice each week, which Mr. Coker deemed insufficient.

My primary worry is that Devonport ward has a warm space, and the library is the heart of the community, so why can’t we use it?” he stated.

Rebecca Smith, the chairperson of the cost of the living taskforce for the Plymouth City Council, stated that the group was striving to make “comparable areas” available.

She stated, “I can confirm that such venues will be available in the area… we must ensure that warm spaces remain so that families and individuals have a place to go.”

James Mackenzie-Blackman, the executive director of Theatre Royal Plymouth, stated that it will also provide warm rooms for individuals unable to heat their houses.

“This Christmas and this winter, when theatres open, anyone who is at home and desires a comfortable place to go can come to the Theatre Royal,” he stated.
