The chief rabbi has stated that virtually every Jewish family in the United Kingdom is impacted in some way by the event that has transpired in Israel.

Sir Ephraim Mirvis stated that the community was experiencing “a period of profound sorrow, profound grief, and enormous concern.”

He further cautioned that “absolutely every precaution must be taken to ensure safety.”

Over 700 Israelis have died since Hamas began their attacks on Saturday morning, 260 of them at a music festival.

Over 100 Israelis have been abducted, most to Gaza, according to Israel. It has opened hostilities against the militant organization in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of approximately 500 Palestinians.

Rabbi Ephraim described the period as “horrendous and traumatic” and stated that “countless individuals demonstrated their unwavering support for our Jewish community and the people of Israel.”

He further stated, “It is critical that individuals comprehend the magnitude of the situation, the scale.”

“Global antisemitism is common, and we just saw one of the worst acts of terrorism since World War II.”

“And we are of course worried, and all steps need to be taken in order to guarantee safety.”

The Board of Deputies of British Jews issued a warning regarding hate crimes in response to the news of the attacks, stating, “Previous conflicts have shown us that antisemitism is likely to increase in the United Kingdom.

“We are in contact with the government and will try to ensure police aid the Jewish community.” We advise the police and CST to be notified of any incidents.”

The statement continued: “We stand with Israel as it seeks to restore security and reunite families.”

Since videos of Hamas supporters applauding the attack on Israel surfaced, London police patrols have increased.

The Metropolitan Police stated that its presence would “reassure communities.”

In the interim, British Transport Police stated that it was conducting an investigation into “Free Palestine” graffiti affixed to bridges in north London’s Golders Green, a prominent Jewish neighborhood.

“Preventing and tackling hate crime is a BTP priority – no one should be subjected to violence or harassment because of who they are,” the police department stated in a statement.

Suella Braverman, the home secretary, stated on Sunday that she anticipated the police to “apply the full force of the law” in prosecuting demonstrations of support for Hamas, a terrorist organization that the United Kingdom prohibits.

According to her “there must be zero tolerance for antisemitism or glorification of terrorism on the streets of Britain”.
