Yonhap news agency, citing various regional governments, reported on Saturday that 24 people had perished, 10 were missing, and thousands had been evacuated in South Korea as a result of the third day of torrential rains that caused landslides and the overflow of a dam.
As of 11 a.m. (2 a.m. GMT), according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, 1,567 persons had been evacuated nationwide as a result of the dam breach in North Chungcheong province on Saturday morning.
Various evacuation orders issued by local governments affected more than 7,000 individuals, according to provincial authorities.
As more heavy rain is expected Sunday, the Korean Meteorological Administration predicts an increase.
Korea Railroad Corp suspended all slow trains and some bullet trains due to landslides, track floods, and falling boulders. While other bullet trains may be delayed due to slowed operation.
A landslip on Friday night caused a delayed train in North Chungcheong province to derail.
The engineer was injured, but there were no other passengers on board.
In a meeting with government agencies on Saturday, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo urged the military to actively participate in rescue operations, mobilizing equipment and personnel alongside government officials.
