Kyrgios is scheduled to appear in court in Canberra the following month on a charge of assaulting a former girlfriend in December 2021.
Wednesday at Wimbledon, the world’s number 40 will face Chile’s Cristian Garin in the quarterfinals.
Australian media reports that tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend.
A spokesperson for ACT Policing in Canberra stated, “ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on August 2 about a charge of common assault stemming from an incident in December 2021.”
The world’s number 40 is currently competing in the United Kingdom and has reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals.
According to the Canberra Times, the charge relates to an allegation that the tennis star grabbed his former partner Chiara Passari.
It added that Key Chambers attorney Jason Moffett confirmed he had been briefed on the matter and that his client was aware of the charge.
Mr. Moffett told the newspaper that the allegation occurred “in the context of a domestic relationship” and that “the nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr. Kyrgios takes it very seriously.”
Wednesday, Kyrgios will play Chile’s Cristian Garin in a quarterfinal match.
Kyrgios has faced numerous opponents in the tournament thus far, including Stefanos Tsitsipas and Brandon Nakashima.
