Rebecca Cheptegei was attacked at her home in western Trans Nzoia County, Kenya. The 33-year-old finished 44th in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics in August, clocking two hours, 32 minutes, and 14 seconds.

A Ugandan marathon runner was severely burned during an alleged attack by her lover.

Rebecca Cheptegei, who finished 44th in the marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is being treated for 75% burns after being attacked at her home in western Trans Nzoia County, Kenya.

Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom stated on Monday that Cheptegei’s lover, Dickson Ndiema, purchased a can of fuel, poured it on her, and lit her on fire during a fight on Sunday.

Ndiema also suffered burns, and the two are receiving specialized care at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

Cheptegei’s parents stated that their 33-year-old daughter purchased land in Trans Nzoia to be near the county’s numerous athletic training facilities.

According to a complaint submitted by the local chief, the couple was heard fighting over the site where the house was erected before the fire broke out.
