Authorities report that 58 people have been attacked in Yamaguchi since 8 July, including attempts to abduct infants.

A special crew has been using tranquilizer guns to target the animals as officials have stated they do not know why the attacks began.

The crew captured a male monkey on Tuesday and put it to death after determining that he was one of those responsible for the attacks.

The alleged community-terrorizing monkeys are Japanese macaques, also known as the snow monkey.

They are widespread throughout Japan and are frequently depicted relaxing in hot springs.

Masato Saito, a city official, remarked, “They are extremely intelligent, and they usually strike from behind, grasping at your legs.

“I’ve never seen something like this before in my life.”

A woman was reportedly attacked by a monkey while hanging laundry on her porch.

Officials have advised individuals on what to do if they see a monkey.

They include avoiding eye contact, and making yourself appear as large as possible, such as by spreading out your coat and backing away as quietly and without rapid movements as possible.

There are no significant injuries, however, everyone has been recommended to seek hospital treatment. In several instances, emergency medical services were called.

There have been unusual attacks on humans in Japan by bears, boars, and other animals, but not typically by monkeys.
