The Natural History Museum was the most visited indoor attraction in the United Kingdom for the second consecutive year.
According to data from the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions, the London museum had 4,654,608 visitors in 2012, surpassing the British Museum with 4,097,253 and the Tate Modern with 3,883,160. (Alva).
Windsor Great Park had 5,636,844 visitors, up 4% from 2021.
Westminster Abbey saw 1,063,067 people in 2022, up 551% from September’s Queen’s funeral.
Attendance at all sites rose 69% from 2021 to 2018, but it was 23% below 2019 pre-COVID levels.
ALVA director Bernard Donoghue called the figures “tourism equivalent of long-COVID” for the British tourism sector.
This is primarily due to the absence of international tourists, particularly from China and the Far East,” he said, “but I am confident that they will return this year and that we will continue to see a healthy recovery.
Attractions reported a busy Christmas, high visitor counts, and strong retail sales to end the year.
After two tough years and a tough economy, people wanted to make unique memories with their families.
The Natural History Museum’s director, Doug Gurr, commented on the figures: “We are delighted to have become the United Kingdom’s most popular indoor attraction for the second consecutive year.
It is evidence of our innovative and inspiring public events and exhibitions program.

The 26-meter-long plaster sculpture of a diplodocus skeleton, which was first displayed at the London museum in 1905, attracted 1,060,813 visitors from late May 2022 to January 2023 as part of a new installation.
From May 2021 to August 2022, Our Broken Planet: How We Got Here and Ways to Fix It exhibited. Which engaged audiences with the planetary emergency, was viewed by 1.2 million people.
