Liverpool fire: Major incident after huge four-storey blaze

  • Major fire in Liverpool centre
  • Evacuations due to collapse risk
  • Fire extinguished, residents return home

According to firefighters, an approximately 100-by-50-meter, four-story building was “well alight” in the city’s heart.

Yesterday, a major incident was declared in Liverpool city center due to concerns that a building might collapse in the wake of a massive fire.

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire on Fox Street at approximately 2:00 pm on Saturday. Upon arrival, they discovered the 100-by-50-metre building to be “well alight.”

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service (MFRS) reported that firefighters and police were forced to evacuate neighboring buildings due to “signs of collapse” emanating from the building.

An inquiry is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Social media posts featured images of dense smoke columns enveloping the city center.

Lara Buchanan, a Liverpool-based teaching candidate, stated that as she exited the Kingsway Tunnel from the Wirral, she could “feel the heat” of the fire emanating from her vehicle.

The 23-year-old stated, “Before entering the tunnel, I noticed the fire but could not determine its source.

“As I emerged from the tunnel into Liverpool, the atmosphere was ominous, and a black rolling cloud was all I could make out.

The passing car generated heat that I could feel as the building burned brightly.

Liverpool’s Largest Fire: Residents React

Jose Garcia, a 41-year-old teacher and a 20-year city resident, described the fire as the “largest I have ever witnessed in Liverpool.”

He stated, “Huge, dense, black smoke was rising into the city.”

Another unidentified Liverpool resident stated that smoke “virtually obscured half of the skyline.”

Additionally, he stated, “As soon as I exited the vehicle, I was overcome with the odor of burning plastic.” “The current is over the water in New Ferry; it was quite strong.”

Individuals were warned to stay away from the vicinity, and those nearby were urged to secure their windows and doors.

According to the service, firefighters were donning respiratory apparatus, and the blaze was partitioned into four sectors.

There were no reports of casualties.

MFRS announced late Saturday afternoon that the incident was no longer significant.

It was stated that effective firefighting strategies had substantially diminished the fire, with the primary fire now extinguished.

MFRS stated in a subsequent update that firefighters continued to confront “hot spots and small pockets of fire.”

Residents in the vicinity were permitted to return home.
