On Wednesday night, the incident occurred on the West Coast Main Line between Penrith and Oxenholme Lake District.
A minimal train service is operating on the remaining open lines, as some are currently obstructed.
Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express, the train operators, issued an alert on Thursday advising passengers to refrain from utilizing their services for trips between Preston and Scotland.
Ticket holders have the option to postpone their voyages until Friday or travel with alternative operators.
Network Rail issued an apology to passengers who were impacted by the derailment and cautioned that services would be disrupted for the remainder of the day.
Specialist repair teams were on site and working as quickly as possible to ensure the railway’s safety.
