Troy Deeney was dismissed as manager of Forest Green Rovers after only six matches, or 29 days on the job. Deeney faced censure in his inaugural managerial position after publicly criticizing his players after last Saturday’s home loss to Harrogate.
The former Watford forward joined League Two Forest Green in the summer as a player-coach before being promoted to manager following the dismissal of former Southampton assistant coach and first-year senior manager David Horseman by club owner Dale Vince.
The Football Association on Thursday imposed a four-game touchline suspension on Deeney for using “inappropriate, abusive, insulting, and threatening language” when he was dismissed in his second game in charge, against Swindon Town.
The 35-year-old manager criticized his squad following the loss to Harrogate, his final game in command since their trip to Mansfield was cancelled in the middle of the week. He stated that Antiques Roadshow was more entertaining than his side. Three were lost, and three were drawn during Deeney’s six league appearances in charge.
Deeney claimed Forest Green players were “inmates running the jail” and had “too many infants from the top down” present. Fankaty Dabo’s underachievement “for five, six, seven, eight, nine weeks” and Reece Brown’s for being tardy were both criticized by him. Deeney further stated, “I have just told him in public that child had a chance to make the Premier League six months ago.” He will no longer play in the National League.
Deeney’s Critique and Dismissal
“On sheer ability, he is the fastest player, but he is run past every game; he fails to make a tackle, and it appears that he kicks the ball with his shin pads each time it approaches him. “Such is the fact of the matter.”
Following the loss to Harrogate, Deeney stated, “The concern is that we haven’t even reached rock bottom yet.”

Vince, who acquired Forest Green in 2010, stated that Deeney’s communication with his players was improper. “I believe it was an error,” Vince expressed. “I do not believe that is the proper method for bringing a group of individuals together or coaching a team.”
Dan Connor, the club’s veteran keeper instructor, is anticipated to assume interim leadership. On Saturday, Forest Green, who are vying for survival against consecutive relegations, travels to Gillingham.
Vince commented on the decision to relieve Deeney of his responsibilities: “While no one enjoys making these sorts of decisions, we felt compelled to act in this manner to provide FGR with the greatest opportunity to improve its results and ascend the league table. Troy is thanked for his efforts and received our sincereest best wishes for the future.
