- Leicester leads, Championship financial woes
- Ipswich impresses, targets Championship promotion
- Leeds, Southampton contend for top spots
Leicester are in the box office with ten games remaining; they are three points clear at the summit and have encouraged rivals with three defeats in their last four contests. What for so long appeared to be a procession is now appearing to be anything but.
Promotion, due to its financial ramifications, appears indispensable in light of the dismal financial outlook. For the 2023-24 season, Leicester is in grave danger of violating the profit and sustainability regulations of the English Football League. Furthermore, there is concern that their financial statements for the three years preceding their relegation last May may also violate the financial regulations of the Premier League. Sanctions are improbable to be implemented this season; however, another round of player sales will probably likely be necessary; after a stellar campaign, their most valuable asset is the homegrown midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Jamie Vardy, one of the high-earning players whose contracts expire this summer, has seized an opportune moment to regain his form; the 37-year-old has scored six goals in his last seven matches. Likewise, Jannik Vestergaard’s contract comes to an end in June. He has been instrumental in the pursuit of the championship. Enzo Maresca’s possession-obsessed squad has, on occasion, struggled to finish opponents off despite having the most victories in the division. What progress they might make toward crossing the line?
The Ipswich Town P36 Points
Ipswich insiders had a quiet optimism that the club would finish in the top half of the table at the beginning of the season, but they could begin the following campaign in the top flight, a level they have not visited since 2002. Irrespective of the manner in which Kieran McKenna’s squad secured second-place status with 98 points and 101 goals, it is incredible that they have suffered only four league defeats; two of those were against the Leeds side, which was breathing down their throats.
Since assuming leadership of the club from mid-table in League One less than two and a half years ago, Ipswich has been impressed by McKenna. The 37-year-old has inspired a ferocious attitude in his squad; they have scored eight goals in the 89th minute or later, including Leif Davis’s game-winning goal against Bristol City in midweek, which secured a sixth consecutive league victory. Recently, Omari Hutchinson, who is on loan from Chelsea to Ipswich, stated, “When we see 90 minutes] and added time, we always believe we can score another goal.”
Davis, who has 14 assists, has been exceptional for the league. Wes Burns has been sensational on the right wing, and captain Sam Morsy has been selfless in the midfield. Mick McCarthy initially acquired Kieffer Moore on loan on the final day of the February transfer window for £10,000 in 2017. Since his arrival, the striker has produced five goals in the past five weeks. Gamechanger 20 Ltd, an American investment fund led by a Los Angeles-based industrialist, acquired Ipswich in 2021. The city may be about to experience a significant breakthrough that surpasses all expectations.
Leeds United, point sixty-six
Despite the prevailing atmosphere of uncertainty, Leeds United were putting the necessary components in place on the eve of the season, following a takeover and under the leadership of a new manager in Daniel Farke, in an effort to qualify for the Premier League at the very least. After submitting a transfer request, Wilfried Gnonto still needs to receive his desired transfer. Seven months later, he is the driving force behind Leeds’s promotion drive, while players like Tyler Adams, Jack Harrison, and Luis Sinisterra are fading memories.
Crysencio Summerville and Archie Grey are two exceptional candidates representing Leeds who are vying for the EFL’s player and junior player of the season accolades, respectively, the following month. A season-long occurrence is Gray’s ascent to the honor roll; he is the great-uncle of the legendary Leeds winger Eddie Grey and will turn 18 the following week. Georginio Rutter, who joined for £36 million from Hoffenheim last season, failed to strike but has performed admirably this season.

While Leicester have been praised for their depth, Leeds have gradually built a squad that could compete with them in terms of quality. Connor Roberts, a full-back who was promoted from champions Burnley the previous season, joined the squad in January as the fourth Welsh international to do so this year. Ethan Ampadu, who has served as captain for the past few months, has been absent for two minutes this season. “Character truly matters,” Farke stated, “not passports.”
Pl35 Southampton, 70 points
A late 2-1 victory by Southampton over Sheffield on Friday evening at Hillsborough to begin the season was indicative of what was to come. Russell Martin’s Saints endured a turbulent stretch of play, falling four games on the bounce in September by an aggregate score of 12-2 before embarking on an unprecedented 25-game unbeaten streak.
Since then, they have suffered three of their last five league losses and required a 96th-minute winner from Adam Armstrong to defeat Birmingham in a tumultuous 4-3 victory last weekend. This season, only Sammie Szmodics of Blackburn has amassed more goals in the division than Armstrong, whose prolific play earned him a transfer to Southampton in 2021).
Following a loan spell in the division with Stoke last season, Will Smallbone has experienced a momentous year in the midfield. At the same time, Kyle Walker-Peters and Che Adams have demonstrated their prowess. “After games, many players in this league continue to speak with me and exclaim, ‘Kyle Walker-Peters, wow,'” said Martin, a former Norwich defender. For us, he has been an indispensable player.
Saints, who are ahead of their opponents by one game, have a hectic schedule following the postponement of Wednesday’s home game against Preston due to a fire near St Mary’s. If they are to challenge for a spot in the top two, they will have to do so through arduous means. Their remaining trips are to Leeds, Leicester, and Ipswich, with the latter three taking place on a potentially decisive day of the season.
