Neymar, who moved from Brazil to Barcelona nine years ago, is on trial for suspected irregularities surrounding the transfer.

The Brazilian international who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain is accused of fraud and corruption in a lengthy court odyssey.

The trial is scheduled to last two weeks beginning on October 17, a month before the World Cup in Qatar.

Several more individuals are also scheduled for trial.

According to Spanish media, two former presidents of the Barcelona football club, Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, as well as Neymar’s parents, face the same claims.

All parties involved in the issue have consistently refuted the charges made by investment group DIS, which claimed it was entitled to forty percent of Neymar’s transfer cost from Brazilian club Santos in 2013 when he left for Barcelona.

DIS stated that it had received significantly less than it should have because a portion of the transfer charge was hidden. DIS received €6.8 million of the €17.1 million paid to Santos when Neymar signed with Barcelona for a €57.1 million (£48 million) transfer fee. The investment fund asserted that the actual cost was far greater.

The high transfer prices of the 30-year-old PSG footballer have long been overshadowed by legal disputes.

In 2017, Barcelona negotiated an out-of-court settlement with the footballer regarding his record-breaking €222 million transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. When he signed a new contract in 2016, the club stated at the time that he owed millions of euros in repayment.

However, the Santos transfer has sparked numerous legal and financial disputes.

In a 2016 court case called Neymar 1, Barcelona agreed to pay Spanish authorities a €5.5 million punishment for irregularities in the transfer.

Sandro Rosell, who resigned as president of the club in 2014 due to the transfer inquiry, served 20 months in prison until being exonerated in 2019 of money laundering fees for broadcast rights.
