People were on their way to church to commemorate a religious holiday when the strike occurred, according to the Ukrainian interior ministry.

In his nightly video address, delivered after a visit to Sweden, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated, “I am confident that our military will respond to Russia for this terrorist attack.

“A notable response.”

He stated that 15 of the 144 injured were minors, and he identified the victim as Sofia. The remaining fifteen were police officers.

Earlier, Mr. Zelenskyy posted the following on Telegram: “A Russian missile struck the city center of our Chernihiv. A plaza, a polytechnic university, and a theatre.

Russia transformed a typical Saturday into a day of suffering and loss.

A short video that accompanied Mr. Zelenskyy’s post depicted debris strewn across a square in front of a regional theatre, where parked vehicles had sustained significant damage.

The video also momentarily displayed a slouched body inside a vehicle.

The interior ministry reported that the strike had devastated the roof of the drama theatre.

The city’s mayor, Oleksandr Lomako, wrote on Telegram, “This attack is yet another war crime committed by the occupiers against the civilian population.

He also proclaimed a period of national mourning until August 21.

Chernihiv is a community with leafy boulevards and centuries-old churches located approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles) north of the capital, Kyiv.

Russia has launched missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian communities far from the frontline as part of the invasion it launched in February of last year.

The Ukrainian military shot down 15 of the 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Moscow overnight, according to the Ukrainian air force.

Before Mr. Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine had began talks with Sweden over Gripen fighter aircraft, it happened.

The Ukrainian president visited Sweden for meetings for the first time since the February 2022 Russian invasion.

He arrived before Russia’s defense ministry announced that a Ukrainian drone had been destroyed over Belgorod.

In recent months, numerous attacks have occurred in the southern region of Russia, which is close to the Ukraine frontier.

The area has frequently been targeted by drones and missiles, but Kyiv has not admitted responsibility for the attacks.

Two days ago, Russia claimed to have shot down a drone in that area.
