UK stations: 1,000 ultra-rapid EV charging points in 5 minutes

  • Rapid EV charging expansion
  • Reduce wait times
  • Gridserve invests £1 billion

Service stations will be equipped with over a thousand ultra-rapid plug-in sites, each capable of charging an electric vehicle in less than five minutes, to reduce lengthy lines.

Certain toll roads have begun employing marshals to direct the lengthy lines of impatient motorists awaiting charging stations.

On the other hand, the chief of the largest charging network in the United Kingdom stated that these images would be “obsolete” once his organization installed the new ports that reduce charging times from thirty minutes to five minutes.

By the end of 2024, Toddington Harper, the CEO of Gridserve, intends to invest £1 billion in installing rapid chargers. Gridserve operates charge terminals at Moto, Roadchef, and Extra service stations.

This signifies a tenfold increase compared to the 124 electric vehicles constructed at the commencement of 2023; by the following year, the organization anticipates charging 400,000 vehicles per month.

Public charging station accessibility concerns deter many people from buying electric cars.

According to Harper, the concerns have accelerated his preparations for additional charging stations across the nation.

Challenges in EV Infrastructure

This month, the RAC recommended six or more quick or ultra-rapid outlets at each English motorway service station by 2023. A total of 46 service stations out of 119 possessed such a quantity.

“A few years ago, it was tough to secure funding for charging infrastructure,” Harper told the Times.

“Instead of being concerned about lines, individuals were concerned about whether or not anyone would show up.” Will electric automobiles become prevalent?

Queues have inspired confidence in the finance community to permanently raise funds to eliminate queues.” One million electric vehicles are expected on US roads by the end of the month.

On average, Tesla superchargers function at a power of 250kW. Gridserve stations require vehicles to connect for an average of 30 minutes to consume 350kW.

EV Charging Revolution Predictions

Harper claims his 350kW chargers can power an electric vehicle 100 kilometres in five minutes.

Although the batteries in most current electric vehicles cannot charge at this rate and intensity, Harper predicts that by 2026, most vehicles will be able to charge at this rate. Newer cars with this capability will be on British roadways by the end of this year.

The Shenxing battery, which CATL, the largest battery manufacturer in the world, began mass-producing last year, claims a 10-minute charge is sufficient for a 250-mile journey.

Harper acquired the Electric Highway network of motorway service stop plug-ins from Ecotricity founder Dale Vince in 2021.

He believes Gridserve’s strategies are so confident that the government will no longer need to allocate nearly £1 billion in subsidies for constructing grid connections on highways.

They believe the implementation of this charging network needs to be more rapid.

The chief executive officer of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Mike Hawes, stated, “We must equip our highways with the most advanced charging technology to accelerate the EV revolution.”

“Manufacturers are investing in faster-charging models, some of which are already on the market. Therefore, we require a national network that can match so that it can be constructed in advance of demand and VAT on public charging can be reduced.”
